About 100% TFS
This website is designed to provide parents, teachers, students, administrators,
coaches and community advocates with information about North Carolina's 100%
Tobacco-Free Schools initiative funded by the Health and Wellness Trust Fund
(HWTF). A 100% Tobacco-Free School prohibits all tobacco use anytime, anywhere
by anyone on all school property and at all school-sponsored events. School
property includes buildings, grounds and vehicles owned or leased by the
school. School-sponsored events include sporting events, school dances and
other events held on and off school property.
The goal of HWTF's 100% TFS
statewide campaign, including this website, is to protect our children's health
by encouraging all 115 school districts in North Carolina to adopt a
model 100% tobacco-free policy. Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue serves as the
chair of HWTF and has been a strong leader for the state's 100% TFS initiative.
HWTF staff works closely with the
NC Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch to promote smoke-free
environments and tobacco-free lifestyles throughout the state, particularly
among North Carolina youth.
This website combines the strengths of government and university resources in
North Carolina. Researchers at the
UNC-Chapel Hill School of Public Health and the
UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention developed the
site content. Much of this content was adapted from previous research conducted
by the
NC DHHS Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch.
